A major issue in user interface design is how to structure the interactioin between the user and system. A formal model for analyzing and designing user-system interaction is exprected to be of great help in dealing with this issue and can thus lead to increased usability. In this paper we investigate the usefulness of the Layered Protocols formalism (Taylor, 1988) for the evaluation and design of user-interfaces for consumer appliances.
